Family and well-being

We all live are born in family whether it’s small or large. Family is important part of everyone’s life. They play a vital on acquiring a person’s behavior. Our lifestyle, our culture, our behavior, our way of thinking depends on the family we come from. Different people acquire well-being in different way as it’s definition is different for different people. The definition of well-being also depends upon background of family.

How well-being is affected by family?

One of the most significant factors beyond a person’s control is the family an individual in which a person is born in. Only few researches have been done till now in how families background is relevant to person’s wellbeing (Aquilino, W. S. 1997).

Study has shown that on average approximately 30-40% of four subjective well-being comes from family background (Schnitzlein & Wunder.,2016). The four subjective well-being elements are:

  • Life satisfaction
  • Satisfaction in household income
  • Job satisfaction
  • Satisfaction with health

Additionally, mother play important role in job satisfaction than father and mostly for daughter compared to son. This theory was suggested by another research by Headey, Muffels, and Wagner (2014). Heady et al., 2014 suggests that parents transmit professional social and family esteems, teaches decisions about work–life balance, social interest, and normal exercise. Emotional and social support by family gives encouragement and satisfaction to children.

I am also close to my family; their support gives me courage, satisfaction and relief. The satisfaction I get from talking to my family cannot be expressed.  Positive emotion is always important for wellbeing. For me, talking to my family is increasing positive emotion and reducing negative emotion.

Pittman and Boswell., 2008 suggest that the research done on family wellbeing are mixed. Some studies suggest that children living in large families with their grandparents have reduced wellbeing that includes higher behavioral problems and less positive behavior, lower educational attainment. However, some research shows children with single mother or single father have more risky behaviors (Delieve & Kalil; 2002).

Children living with parents in youngster are more vulnerable and lack positive emotion and engagement as they are mostly dependent on parents. Some children grown up with more love and affection have also low satisfaction in life. Family conflicts have lead to stress, depression, anxiety and low job satisfaction. With increase in family issues, there is chance of mental ill health leading to poor well-being. Family conflict is associated with person’s lower psychological well-being, lower satisfaction in life and work (Dunifon et. al., 2014).
